Wilson to coach Mystics in 2017
The SKYCITY Mystics have announced Helene Wilson as their head coach for the 2017 New Zealand Elite League.
Wilson will take over the reins from Debbie Fuller who announced she wouldn’t continue in the role beyond this season.
Most recently, Wilson guided Northern in the Beko Netball League, and she has previously coached the New Zealand Secondary Schools team, as well as being an assistant coach with the Mystics in 2014, amongst other representative roles.
“The fresh start with the competition structure gives you a license to explore the style of game you want to play,” Wilson said.
“We can really focus on that with the SKYCITY Mystics. Netball in New Zealand is about flare, excitement and playing an aerial style of game. This is a chance to get back to that.”
An athlete life advisor for High Performance Sport NZ (HPSNZ) by day, Wilson has also played a role behind-the-scenes with the NZ women’s rugby 7’s and hockey programmes.
SKYCITY Mystics CEO, Julie Paterson says Wilson brings a connection to the region, having coached throughout Auckland, as well as in Northland.
“Helene’s appointment presents a huge opportunity to link the whole Northern Zone together in a programme that can create a Netball legacy for our area,” Paterson said.
