Match Preview (R12): Mystics v Magic

TEAM NEWS:

The WBOP Magic’s form has slumped with a couple of big losses in recent weeks and they must dig deep to pull something special out against the SKYCITY Mystics in a key ANZ Premiership match – the winner will take a big step towards booking their place in the Elimination Final.

A morale-sapping 19-goal loss to the Ascot Park Hotel Southern Steel was the Magic’s fifth defeat in six games and captain Casey Kopua admitted their confidence had taken a hit.

“These girls have huge potential but when we keep losing it’s not helpful,” she said.“I think we do show great fight but it’s just about the basics.”

Kopua said it was important to “come together” in what was a quick turnaround before the Mystics game and they would focus on their “execution”.

“At the end of the day we can’t win if we don’t hold onto the ball.”

The Mystics won all but the fourth quarter when the two teams met last, taking the game by four goals.

Momentum is also possibly in the blue camp after they came within a few seconds of toppling the Steel before grinding out a hard-fought win over the Northern Stars.

WHO TO WATCH:

Ariana Cable-Dixon (Magic) – the midcourter has had a mixed performance in the last two matches and will be keen to put in a strong showing in a pivotal game for the Magic.A tough head-to-head awaits with Samon Nathan who has a steady approach to her game with few mistakes.

Bailey Mes (Mystics) versus Kelly Jury (Magic) – the Magic goal keeper has five centimetres on her Mystics opponent but will be wary of the vertical jump Mes possesses and her rebounding ability..

Anna Harrison (Mystics) – the Mystics co-captain has been in top form out at wing defence for her side and coach Helene Wilson may be tempted to keep her outside of the circle in what would be a key match-up against Silver Fern Grace Rasmussen.
